About the city

Coimbatore, also known as Manchester of South India, is one of the largest and beautiful cities in India. Located under the foot hills of  Blue Mountains, the Nilgiris, Coimbatore has the ranges of the Western Ghats to its North, South and West.

Coimbatore was formerly known as ‘Kovan Puthur’ symbolizing the Irula Chief Kovan who ruled out this area in those days. It was ruled by several dynasties but it was Kongu Cholas who ruled this area in the middle ages brought fame and wealth to this area.

People here were famous for its hard working and this area is known for apiaries economy. Millet, Paddy, Cotton, Oil seeds, Betnel nut, Turmeric Tea, Coffee and tobacco are being cultivated here. It is one of the leading industralized city and in view of the so many textile miles it is called as the Manchester of South India.

In view of the composition of a Metropolis, this city has a well developed social infrastructure including hotels, Health services, Research institutions, Professional colleges, Two universities and one deemed university.

Of the many temples in Coimbatore, the Kaumara Mutt and Temples situated 8 km north of Coimbatore Bus stand, 10 km from the Railway Station and 15 km from the Airport.

Access

Coimbatore is well connected by Air, Rail and Road. There are frequent connecting flights and trains to New Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Calcutta, Cochin and Bangalore.

Airport

Peelamedu Airport is 10 km from the City. Regular Air Service connects Coimbatore to Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, besides Madurai, Tiruchi and Calicut. There is also a flight operating to Sharjah, UAE.

Railways
Rail routes connect Coimbatore to all major cities in India, trains are accessible from the Coimbatore Junction. 

Road transport
The city is well connected by roads to all major towns in Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka. With private and public sector participation, the road transportation system in Coimbatore is considered as one of the best in India. State Transport Corporation's Interstate Express buses are available from the Central bus stands situated at Gandhipuram.

There are many city buses available from Gandhipuram Bus stand to Sri Kaumara Mutt, Chinnavedampatti.
